Another Saturday shooting in Chilliwack

From Tony Parsons to pre-teens playing football, here are 10 photos from another 24 hours taking photographs on a weekend in Chilliwack.
It's always a bit of an adventure and an experience to move between a vigil for a drowned fisherman, to a junior A hockey game, to the scene of a fire, to an event to help low income people, to a 30-kilometre trail run at Cultus Lake, to Vedder Canal fishing to kids football . . . and so on.

Here are 10 photos from 10 different events, seven from Saturday and two from Friday night, but starting with Tony Parsons at UFV Friday afternoon.

Tony Parsons discusses what kind of dog he owns, among other topics at UFV on Friday.

Mayor Sharon Gaetz (right) looks on as the parents of Chrisopher Vang mourn the passing of the 24-year-old at a vigil at Chilliwack's Island 22 on Friday. Vang died when he drowned in the Fraser River in September attempting to help a friend who had fallen into the river. He was wearing hip waders but no life jacket.

The Chilliwack Chiefs beat the Vernon Vipers at Prospera Centre Friday night. Note the excitement of the crowd . . . is one of those two individuals sleeping or checking texts?

A dog died in this fire Friday night. I drove by as assistant fire chief Ian Josephson and cops were investigating Saturday morning to see if it was suspicious or not.

This is from Chilliwack Connect, an event with about 200 volunteers where food, clothing and a number of services are provided to homeless and low-income individuals and families. I found it incredibly sad, frankly, given the number of young children there lined up for a meal, some free shoes and maybe a haircut.

The culture behind model train enthusiasts is, well, a little weird. It's hard to fathom just how dedicated and devoted people are as adults to what is essentially toys. Having said that, some pretty cool stuff.

I took a few cool photos of men and women running in the woods at the annual Around the Lake Giver 'R Take 30 at Cultus Lake on Saturday, but I just loved the look on this little girl's face as she cheered on her dad at the finish line.

The smell and sight of rotting fish lingers over the Vedder Canal as fishermen zig-zag up and down the waterway looking to catch a coho on the second-last (I think?) day of legal retention of that salmon species.

I said coho, which is mostly what was being caught, but, of course, this is a dead sockeye.

The diversity in size among kids in this pre-teen age category of football is hilarious. There are some kids that literally are twice as big as other kids. This gigantic kid looks more like a lineman but, apparently, has good hands as he was the wide receiver. After scoring this touchdown he did a classic, old-school spike of the ball and his team was assessed a 10-yard penalty after the kick-off. Come on!
